The Sega Genesis

I didn’t have a Sega Genesis growing up.  I had wanted one when I saw what the system could do graphically, but I ended up with a NES instead.  While I’m glad I ended up with the NES, I always wondered what kind of gamer I’d be if I had wound up with that Genesis instead.  I ended up getting into a ton of arguments during my grade school years because I became a pretty big Nintendo fanboy over the years.  Even so, whenever I did get the rare chance to play a Genesis, I was incredibly interested in what it had to offer.

I really wanted to get into the Sonic the Hedgehog games, but I didn’t really get around to playing through any of them until recently.  See the video above.  I picked up a Genesis at a Goodwill for cheap enough, and I do enjoy playing it from time to time.  As of right now, I have the following games:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Aladdin
  • Comix Zone
  • Ecco The Dolphin
  • The Lion King
  • Mega Man: The Wily Wars
  • Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
  • NHL 97
  • Rocket Knight Adventures
  • Sub Terrania
  • Tinhead
  • World of Illusion

I’m looking for suggestions on other games to check out.  I know that the Genesis is a great system for shooters, and I’d love to try some out.  I’m not great at shooters, but I like playing them regardless.  I know that I need to check out the Streets of Rage series, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Beyond Oasis, Bio-hazard Battle, and Alisia Dragoon.  Send me any other games I should try out in the comments section.

  1. Hey, B! It’s TheRequiem95 from SEGANerds.com.

I heard you picked up a SEGA Genesis, my personal favorite console of all time! Congrats! Need some game ideas? I got you covered, boyo.

You should definitely try Gunstar Heroes, Splatterhouse 2 & 3, the Shining Force series, and both Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III. Those are given, but I have some less obvious picks, too!

Looking for shooters? Try Steel Empire, MUSHA, Wings of Wor (aka Gynoug) and Lightening Force (yep- the word “Lightning” is misspelled). Adventure/RPG fan? Try Landstalker, Crusader of Centy or the Phantasy Star series. For action, pick up Chiki Chiki Boys, El Viento, Burning Force, Ranger X and the Adventures of Batman & Robin.

All of the games I listed were Genesis exclusives in North America, so you won’t find them on those gray Nintendo boxes for babies! 😉

    “Welcome to the next level!”
